Parking meters at the mall

Anyone who has been to The Shops at Wiregrass in Wesley Chapel probably has noticed the parking meters on Paseo Drive. While there is no charge to park in the lots, there is a $1.00/hr parking meter charge to park in front of the stores.

Has anyone ever seen a meter reader there or received a ticket for being parked at an expired meter? I wonder about parking meters on a street that is not maintained by the county or the state.

Very interesting! I parked at a meter twice last week, because of the rain. I never let the meter expire, but I've never seen anyone checking either.

I guess if they are not monitored by any governmental authority, it would be difficult to issue a "ticket" and collect fines. Perhaps it is just a "deterrent" by the mall developers to encourage patrons to only use those spots for short term parking.

They can't ticket you if its not maintained or governed by the county. It's all extra revenue for the managing company.

According to a store clerk I spoke to they havein the past left a courtesy warning on your window. I've always fed the meter, but it usually expires by the time we leave.

So if all that happens is a "courtesy warning" why would people feed the meter?

I had received a "warning" on my car one day. The meter was expired less then 10 minutes. Someone had told me that they will leave a warning the first time, then a ticket the second time. I don't know anyone who has gotten one, so I don't know that to be exact. Wonder if a call to someone that works in the county would get an answer.

I did not get a ticket but I did see a guy on a bicycle monitoring the meters.

Maybe they can't issue tickets, but they can tow you since it's private property.

Hans,

If it is private property I don't know how they can ticket you. So far no one has indicated they have received a ticket. They are probably there to encourage short term parking only.

My wife and I asked one of the security guards if the meters were monitored and he said "Kinda". He said that all money in the meters is donated to charity and they will NOT give you a ticket but will give you warnings.

I don't feel so bad putting a few dollars in if it goes to charity! I'm guessing they don't advertise the charity thing so people will keep putting money in :-)

Josh,

Interesting!

They do that so the spots in front of the stores are empty most of the time. Sometimes if you are in a hurry you just need to run in and get something and do not want to park all the way in the back. Usually if I do that it is just 25cents (15minutes). I think it is a great idea because I never have a problem finding a spot there. Great parking control. Its their property... its not like they don't have enough space... we are lucky to have a mall this beautiful, lets not complain about meters.

I recieved a warning after being a couple of minutes over. There was nothing on it that identified my car so I doubt that they could ticket you if you did it again. It may have said something about towing but I don't remember.
