Friends of the New Tampa Regional Library have initiated a campaign for an expansion. Currently with 25,000 square feet, the library which opened in 1997 is the county's second busiest library with 55,000 items checked out in January.Possible expensions include adding a second floor with 10,000 additional space of square footage and/or adding to the first floor with 10,000 additional square feet. The Tampa Tribune reports that if the expansion is included in the 2008 budget for the New Tampa library, the expansion could be completed by 2011.
